pulling even with president obama among registered voters, 46% even. four weeks ago pew had obama up by nine among registered voters, so this has been a huge shift in the pew poll. the move in the pew poll towards romney is greater among likely voters. romney is surging ahead to 49%. four weeks ago obama led among likely voters by eight. now to the latest gallup tracking poll which covers the last seven days. gallup has president obama back in the lead at 50 to 45. what a difference from the other polyp that's exactly where the race stood before the debate. romney had surged in the tracking poll. the two candidates were actually tied in the three days immediately after the debate, but the president seems to have wiped out romney's gains in the gallup poll. joining me right now are howard fineman, editorial director of the "huffington post," and the honorable michael nutter, mayor of philadelphia and presidential surrogate in this tough campaign. gentlemen, thank you for joining us. always go to the elected official first. mr. mayor, what needs to be done right now to right this sh

. there is pressure on biden to deliver after president obama's poor performance last week. also, this is a campaign where president obama is running as much against paul ryan's ideas as he is against mitt romney. that elevates ryan as well. >> it seems clear in choosing chris van holland they will go against the first ryan budget, the first medicare plan and also the ryan book. they will go after the budget cuts and troo to tag mitt romney with the severity, using the term relatively, of the ryan budget cuts. >> right. rom uh any down played the ryan road map. keep in mind the first ryan budget plan included privatizing social security, at least to a certain extent. that's something ryan then dropped in his subsequent budgets. it was there and he was one of the advocates of the plan to put it in the market. secondly the medicare issue. those entitlements, we'll ha from biden about thursday. a lot of democrats think he dropped the ball not pushing the issues against mitt romney. joe biden will read ryan's book and go after those entitlements. >> up next, as mitt romney focuses on

post debate polling shows the race tightening now with four weeks to go. a new pugh research center survey showing mitt romney leading president obama 49-45 in a national head-to-head matchup. that's among likely voters, people who are most committed to participating in the november 6 election. but gallup has a different result in the daily tracking report. according to the seven-day rolling average, the president leads mitt romney 50 to 45. that is among registered voters. good news for the romney campaign in the state of michigan meanwhile. president obama was leading by ten points last month. according to the detroit free press, after the debate, same poll has the president's lead down to three points. that is within the margin of error. perhaps the biggest gain for the romney campaign comes from that pugh survey which shows republican candidate making huge gains with women voters. he's now tied with the president according to pugh. 47-47. just a month ago, the president had an 18-point lead in this poll among women voters. today mr. romney rallies voters in iowa a day after deli

that mitt romney cheated in the debate against president obama this week not by having somebody feed him the answers through an ear piece but rather by bringing the illegal crib sheet on to the debate stage with him. you see, previous debate rules have set out very clearly that, quote, no props, notes, charts, diagrams, or other writings or other tangible things may be brought into the debate by any candidate and yet have a look at this damning evidence. this is at the very beginning of the debate on wednesday night and as you'll be able to see clearly here what is that in your pocket? mr. romney very clearly pulls something from his right pocket and he pops it on to the podium in front of him. violation. violation. according to the conspiracy, complete with the grainy, slow mo youtube videos, this is mr. romney cheating. now he must have been working from note cards the entire debate. the explanation from the romney campaign is mr. romney was not pulling notes out of his pocket. he was pulling out of his pocket a handkerchief. sure enough, a little later on, oop, in the debate mr. r

against obama. he repeated the lie to cnn just last week. there was a moment back in may when it became a scandal that a pro-mitt romney super pac had even been pitched the idea of bringing jeremiah wright back as an attack on president obama. that ad campaign was never picked up by the pro-romney super pac or the romney campaign itself. it was a scandal they had even been asked to pick up something that racially charged. but a few months later, the campaign picked up the welfare nonsense campaigning in a way that's divorced from the facts but that's loaded with enough sub text to knock you over in a still wind. and they picked up newt gingrich surrogate in his food stamps attack. no and now fox news and the pro-mitt romney drudge report just are going full bore on the jeremiah wright stuff, as o of right now. in 2008 the john mccain had a choice about whether or not they should campaign on really overtly racial appeals. things like the jeremiah wright attack. they chose not to in 2008. if the romney campaign is going to keep going there along with the the conservative media, can it work

here. >> sure. >> you're pegging obama with 320.1 electoral votes, up nearly 11 in the last couple weeks or last week, romney at 217.9. 320 is a lot of electoral votes. that would be i think a mandate. >> so -- well i don't know if i would call ate mandate necessarily. if you have a small advantage in the popular vote and then if the swing states behave accordingly, obama's polling is stronger in the swing states it would look impressive on the map, it would be a below average margin for the incumbent. romney does have his work cut out for him. of the six we talked about before, the two biggest problems are probably ohio where he hasn't led in the poll by a long time and, in fact, his best polls put him down three or four points. the worst put him down nine or ten points. ohio is a huge problem for romney right now and wisconsin where he seemed to get a bounce often due when he named paul ryan has faded and see how single digits, a couple double-digit leads for obama in that state as well. without those two romney would have to sweep almost everything else including nevada, iowa, v

particularly with obama getting something of a bounce going into the debates that obama had a clear edge and that, in fact, it would be very hard to turn this around for romney in the final weeks. what we're seeing now i think is that may not be the case and the october surprise everyone always talks about is, in fact, that we're back where we were in the spring. it's a very close race. >> and in fact, to the point of both of the campaigns, they've been saying all along they thought in the end this was going to be a very tight race, but some of the numbers that really jump out for me, jackie, are enthusiasm and engagement. 67% of romney's supporters now back him strongly. 82% say they're giving a lot of thought to this election. this was a guy who going into his convention, and not the most successful convention, either, was still having trouble getting people really excited about his campaign. has he turned that around? >> you know, there's two things here. i mean, we talked about this all the way going up to the debate how important that debate was, and it was very important for mitt romne

obama in lass week's debate and an opportunity to see going forward is the promise of this election for obama was that he could use this to create a public dialogue about the issue of taxing the wealthy. it has been 22 years now since a single republican member of congress has voted for a tax increase of any kind, an income tax increase. if you're going to have any kind of a long-term deal, a long-term dif set deal, which is what everybody -- not everybody, but a lot of people on both sides who say this is what they want. if you're going to, it will include a tax component on the wealthy. >> if obama campaigns on that and wins and if democrats hold the senate and make gains in the house, that could ratchet up pressure on republicans to make some kind of deal. otherwise, you have the other thing. it's a myth that nothing is going to happen in the lame duck, because if they take democrat off and congress doesn't show up, a lot will happen. december 31st, the expiration of the bush tax cuts. they go away if nothing happens. something ahas to happen. >> i find it extremely rich to hear john

week, the obama administration announced it favored canceling a 16-year-old $3.5 billion tomato trade deal with mexico. the deal encourages imports and has kept tomato prices low. but florida growers say they're so low they can't catch up. the numbers show mexican tomato sales have quadruple since 2000 while florida has seen its cut shrink dramatically. after a flurry of letters from lawmakers, the commerce department decided to repd the trade agreement be scrapped. mexico growers were stunned, upset they hadn't been granted a meeting until after the decision. why did the decision get rushed? presidential politic, the influence of those florida growers might have played just a small role. michael isakoff is nbc's national investigative correspondent. it's an election year and hearing about issues like this, oh, favoritism of this front for florida. favoritism on that front for ohio. it shouldn't come as a shock and yet, we see it play out every year. four years, excuse me. >> this is a fascinating look about how to use the levers of power of incumbency to help yourself in an ele

that says, oh, he loves teachers and last week he said obama wants to hire more teachers and i'm not for that. that suddenly he's for -- he's not for cutting taxes on the top earners in this country, on the wealthy, and, of course, his whole proposal is denying that he has a proposal that would cut taxes by $5 trillion. there's a name to that proposal. he printed it out. the analysis that was done was based on a romney proposal that now he says he doesn't know what obama is talking about. it's utterly amazing, hard to debate somebody who has totally different plans than he really has said in the past. >> does this mean the president has fulfilled his promise to get unemployment below 8% and this isn't a one-term proposition? >> you know, you can't deny the numbers. 7.8% is, in fact, lower than 8%, and that's kind of the benchmark that the republicans have laid out. i'm sure they are extremely disappointed that there are better job numbers in the united states of america because they have been trying to sabotage any efforts, every day i see it in the congress, they have been trying to
